The case: At 52, Julien is Director of operations for a large automobile dealership. Competition is fierce and his boss has been relentlessly breathing down his neck for years, demanding better results. Burned out, Julien gets a medical leave of absence. He’s had enough of this dead-end job and his ungrateful boss. He’ll start a new career somewhere else; but what and where?
The insight: After a few months rest, he decides to meet with a career counsellor to try and figure things out. With a bit of help, he learns to reclaim what he loves the most in his line of work: to serve and to help. Actually, it’s not so much his job he wants to quit, but rather his unreasonable boss.
The decision: Not wanting to throw the baby out with the bath water, Julien decides to remain in the automobile sector, but to change paths and target customer service management jobs. He also becomes more selective in choosing his employer, to ensure his work will be noticed and appreciated.

The case: Victor, 37, has been working for 15 years as a machinist and toolmaker in a factory. He loves his job and is appreciated by both his colleagues and boss. Unfortunately, Victor had to take a medical leave following a work accident which left him with 3 fingertips missing. Ouch!
The challenge: Despite a few surgeries giving him back some dexterity, Victor can no longer manipulate the tools he uses at work and cannot go back to the same workstation. He needs to find something else, but what? Victor has many productive years ahead of him and his expertise is valuable.
The solution: After 8 sessions with a career counsellor, Victor learned to make peace with his physical limitations and honed into the deep experience and knowledge he has acquired over the years. He focussed on related interests and skills, which made him an ideal candidate for a position as a CAD drafter. After a few refresher courses, he relaunched his career and is once again an active member of his employer’s workforce.

The situation: Valérie is a 41 year-old communications and public affairs executive working for a multinational company that has seen its share skyrocket. She loves what’s happening to her stock, yet with crazy hours, tighter deadlines, and little time for anything else, she is feeling a big part is missing. Eventually, she burns out and is now on a short disability leave. Not good.
The dilemma: Valérie knows she needs rest and regroup, but she can’t keep still. She is anxious about returning to work and is losing sleep over it. Should she go back? Change jobs? Change career? Sensing her ambiguity, her rehabilitation counselor suggests she meet with a career counselor to help her weigh her options.
The results: After only 5 sessions, Valérie learned stress management techniques, has regained perspective and sees the pros and cons of her options. Getting in touch with her strengths and self-esteem, she feels able to return to work, but will engage her employer about certain work conditions, and will take it from there.

The case: At 42, Josée has 20 years experience as an administrative assistant, the last 10 working in business law. She likes it tremendously. Bad luck and double whammy, she develops debilitating migranes that prevent her from working long hours AND she loses her job when the small law firm where she works merges with a much larger one. Josée must find another job, migranes and all.
The dilemma: Josée loves her line of work and has an excellent reputation, but finding an employer who will accommodate her needs for frequent resting periods is a major challenge. But what if she were self-employed and could work from home?
The verdict: Thanks to the support of a counsellor, Josée discovered that becoming a freelance transcriber would be ideal in her condition and would allow her the flexibility she needs to best manage oncoming migraines. Excited, she launched her freelance business and created her marketing material based on her acquired skills. She identified different professional sectors that could benefit from her services, started cold calling and spread the news through the wide network of contacts she had made over the years. Bravo Josée!
