A test case
The situation: Valérie is a 41 year-old communications and public affairs executive working for a multinational company that has seen its share skyrocket. She loves what’s happening to her stock, yet with crazy hours, tighter deadlines, and little time for anything else, she is feeling a big part is missing. Eventually, she burns out and is now on a short disability leave. Not good.
The dilemma: Valérie knows she needs rest and regroup, but she can’t keep still. She is anxious about returning to work and is losing sleep over it. Should she go back? Change jobs? Change career? Sensing her ambiguity, her rehabilitation counselor suggests she meet with a career counselor to help her weigh her options.
The results: After only 5 sessions, Valérie learned stress management techniques, has regained perspective and sees the pros and cons of her options. Getting in touch with her strengths and self-esteem, she feels able to return to work, but will engage her employer about certain work conditions, and will take it from there.
